If you have small children and are not living with the other parent, you are eligible for child support.
Telephone companies throughout Alabama offer reductions of $13 to $17 for customers on Medicaid, Food Stamps, SSI, TANF, Public Housing, Section 8 or LIHEAP.
You may qualify for Food Stamps (SNAP) even if you are able bodied and have no dependents. You may be able to qualify as a separate household even if you live with others.
Health Insurance for Small Children
Children under 19 may be eligible for free or reduced-cost health insurance (ALLKids) if they are not covered by Medicaid.
Early Health Benefit for Children
Children on Medicaid are entitled to participate in the Early, Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT).
Elderly Drug Benefit
If you are 55 years old or older, you may be eligible for free or reduced-cost medications, even if you do not have prescription drug insurance. Many county offices offer assistance.
If anyone in your household is receiving public benefits, you may be able to get reduced rates from a utility company.
Income Tax Help
Many programs throughout Alabama offer free tax preparation by preparers who understand the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and can file electronically for a quick refund. You can also do this yourself on-line at www.icanefile.org. There are free clinics able to help you with tax problems.
Debt Collection and Garnishments
If bill collectors are harrassing you, you have the right to tell them not to call you about debts. If your income and assets are low enough, or your bank account only has Social Security or SSI in it, you may be exempt from garnishment and execution. You may not be able to protect your income and assets if you owe for child support, student loans or income tax debt.
